Interpreters

Overview

What qualifications should I look for when I need a translator or interpreter?

To begin with, we’d recommend finding a reputable language solutions firm, rather than trying to find an independent translator or interpreter. First and foremost, the firm already will have already vetted the credentials, experience and referrals of their professional translators and interpreters, and negotiated fees, contract terms and working conditions with them, saving you valuable time.

Second, firms have access to a greater number of linguists, so there is always a qualified professional available to assist you even when your timeline is short.

Interpreting, just like translation, is fundamentally the art of paraphrasing—the interpreter listens to a speaker in one language, grasps the content of what is being said, and then paraphrases his or her understanding of the meaning using the tools of the target language.

Interpretation is a complex task. It requires that the interpreter select the right word for a spoken translation instantly and without fail. There is no opportunity to edit; no margin for error. To be effective, the interpreter must:

Have extensive experience with interpreting
Have in-depth knowledge of the subject area
Integrate cultural preferences into their choice of words and phrases with only a split second to think about them

However, just as you can not explain a thought to someone if you did not fully understand that thought, neither can you translate or interpret something without mastery of the subject matter being relayed.

It simply cannot be overstated: when choosing an interpreter, his or her expert knowledge of the subject matter is equally as important as their interpreting experience.

Language Business interpreters possess the following skills:
Thorough knowledge of the general subject to be interpreted
Intimate familiarity with both cultures
Extensive vocabulary in both languages
Ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely in both languages
Excellent note-taking techniques for consecutive interpreting
At least 2-3 years of booth experience for simultaneous interpreting

Whether a client requires simultaneous interpretation for large conferences or consecutive interpretation for meetings, that client must have complete confidence in their interpreter’s skills.
